Montevertine Rosso Toscana IGT 2012
Sergio Manetti’s Montevertine, for many, is Tuscany’s standard bearer. After a hand-harvest and two years in barrel, the wines are fermented in large cement cuves and returned to large Slavonian oak. This medium-bodied wine is at least 90% Sangiovese; dry, earthy and elegant, perfect with pork, steak, cheese, sausage and red sauce. The Manetti’s are famous for NOT blending white wine into their reds. This helps the wines age. Its earthiness, acidity and focus come from Radda’s slightly raised elevation, along with the vineyard’s limestone soil. Montevertine’s neutral Slovanian barrels guarantee that oak won’t dominate. An elegant, very dry, textured, world-class red.
Azienda Agricola La Torre Brunello di Montalcino 2010
In La Sesta, the highest altitude section of the Brunello appellation, LaTorre’s three acres of vineyards are planted almost entirely to the Sangiovese Grosso grape and have full south-southwestern exposure. All grapes are destemmed prior to fermentation. Only indigineous yeasts are used. All wines at the estate are bottled by gravity, unfiltered. The wine for the Brunello is selected from the oldest vines and the most well-positioned vineyards, and is fermented in stainless steel for 3 weeks. It is then racked into large barrels to age for forty-two months. Annual production is a mere 1,000 cases! Open twenty minutes before serving this earthy, dry and delicious, generous Tuscan red, from a GREAT vintage.
Conti Origini Vina Rosso 2014
This entry-level, dominantly Nebbiolo blend is a great example of why the Conti sisters are on fire in the New York market; and also, of how great value bottlings can be found in the Alto Piemonte. Their Origini bottling is dark-hued, with a sumptuous texture and lovely aromatics. It also includes Uva Rara, Croatina, Vespolina, Barbera de Boca; and is made from seventy year old vines. Moreover, all varietals are co-planted, co-fermented, and made with no additional sulfur. An excellent wine for pairing this summer with regional cheeses, grilled lamb, steak, pork, sausages.
